I believe that each Cantonese word has about 8 tones whereas each Mandarin word has only 4 tones. This richness of the Cantonese tones makes Cantonese songs and operas very smooth and pleasant. I am learning to appreciate Cantonese songs more as I grow old.
Wonder if classical poems were written according to Mandarin or some other popular dialect?

ReplyDelete我来自马来西亚的华人,对广东的历史文化没什么了解。
家族中有亲人来往南洋,小时候常常听到大人们有关“去番”,“过番”和“番客”的话题,那时认为“番”就是南洋。至今不知所说的“番”是否与老广州这个“番”有所关联,从没考究过。

多謝大家的留言。這番禺的有關歷史原來可以上推至遠古。中國的《山海經》都有它的記載,誰說廣東南蠻之地無文化?
